Sleep Apnea
The Basics of Sleep Apnea
The word “apnea” is derived from the Greek word meaning “without breath”.
Sleep apnea is a very common disorder affecting over 12 million Americans. Of those affected by sleep apnea, about 90% of sufferers do not even realize they have the sleep disorder.
Most people who suffer risk from sleep apnea are either, male, over 40, or overweight. However, any individual can possibly be affected by sleep apnea including children.
Sleep apnea can become a very serious issue for most people as they will stop breathing while in their sleep for 10 to 30 seconds, or even up to 2 minutes at a time. This can occur hundreds of times throughout the night without the sleeper even knowing it. However, in some cases, the person sleeping will awaken from the inability to breathe.
All of this activity throughout the night can cause the person suffering from sleep apnea to feel tired and unrefreshed the next day and in many cases not even understand why.
